Russian invading forces struck a residential high-rise in Kyiv's Desnianskyi district overnight, killing two residents, State Emergency Service (SES) reported on Oct. 14.

Emergency crews contained and extinguished a major fire covering an area of 400 square meters.

SES noted that the casualty toll is expanding as affected residents continue seeking urgent medical care. First responders recovered the bodies of two deceased victims from the apartment block.

Firefighters and rescue squads successfully evacuated and saved 16 residents trapped inside the building. A total of 21 people sustained injuries in the building, including one child. Search, clearing, and recovery operations remain underway at the site, where departmental psychological support teams have already provided emergency trauma counseling to 110 citizens.

The overnight assault caused damage and secondary fires across multiple capital districts:

  • Dniprovskyi district: Secondary strike ignited a blaze inside an unoccupied commercial structure.

  • Darnytskyi district: Fire crews rapidly extinguished an open fire on a sports stadium lawn.

  • Shevchenkivskyi district: A direct impact on a single-story disused building caused a localized fire that was promptly suppressed.

  • Holosiivskyi district: An incoming strike slammed into a non-residential building, killing one person and injuring another.

On the evening of Oct. 13, Russian forces targeted Kyiv with ballistic missiles. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy disclosed that Ukraine received no advance warning of the missile launches from Western partners, with the supersonic weapons detected only on their terminal approach to the capital.

The preceding evening ballistic barrage and drone strikes resulted in 21 people injured — including a child — and two confirmed dead, before the additional overnight wave struck the Desnianskyi high-rise.

The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.

Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.

For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
