Sakhalin island plunged into darkness after plant blast
A powerful explosion at the Sakhalin GRES-2 thermal power plant on Sakhalin Oblast reportedly caused a widespread blackout across the island, disrupting industry, transport and utilities, local media wrote on Oct. 28.
Local residents described a bright flash and a loud blast that could be heard several kilometres from the plant.
Preliminary reports indicate the incident took place at the Sakhalin GRES-2 — one of the Russia's Far East’s key energy facilities, supplying electricity to much of the island.
The outage has caused disruptions to industrial enterprises, transport and municipal services across the Oblast.
