Spain prepares $712 million Ukraine aid package

Spain will approve a EUR615 million ($712 million) military aid package for Ukraine within a month, PM Pedro Sánchez said at a joint news conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Madrid on Nov. 18.
“Within a month Spain will adopt a new military assistance package for Ukraine worth EUR615 million,” Sánchez said.
“This package will primarily include weapons valued at EUR300 million. Also under our agreement is one billion euros that we will provide to Ukraine in material support.”
The PM added that Spain has agreed to allocate one billion euros annually for military support to Ukraine.
Earlier this month, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Diego Martínez Belio said Spain would announce a “significant” aid package for Ukraine during Zelenskyy’s visit.
During the trip, Zelenskyy met with defense sector officials and toured the Madrid headquarters of Indra, a company specializing in radar and counter-drone systems. At the same press conference, Zelenskyy said Spain would provide 40 missiles for IRIS-T air defense systems as part of the new aid package.
On Nov. 18, Bloomberg reported that Zelenskyy planned to sign a defense cooperation agreement with several Spanish firms during his stay in Madrid.
