Ukraine gets first tranche in frozen Russian assets from Canada
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced the release of the first tranche from $5 billion in frozen Russian assets, alongside a new military aid package for Ukraine, at the Support Ukraine forum in Kyiv on Feb. 24.
Trudeau outlined Canada’s latest military assistance, which includes:
- 25 LAV II infantry fighting vehicles
- Four F-16 flight simulators
- Aircraft landing systems
- Ammunition
- Additional undisclosed military equipment.
Frozen Russian assets
Jan. 15, 2025 – The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump may push Russia to finance Ukraine’s reconstruction using its frozen assets.
December 2024 – The U.S. transferred $1 billion to Ukraine, secured by revenues from frozen Russian assets — for the first time.
Jan. 3, 2025 – The G7 and EU pledged $50 billion to Ukraine for 2025, backed by frozen Russian funds.
Jan. 10, 2025 – The EU delivered its first transfer of funds from Russia’s frozen assets, totaling €3 billion.
Jan. 24, 2025 – Trump’s special envoy Keith Kellogg confirmed that U.S. officials are considering using Russian assets to purchase American weapons for Ukraine.
Feb. 22, 2025 – Bloomberg reported that the EU is exploring more aggressive measures to confiscate Russia’s frozen central bank reserves, aiming to sustain Ukraine’s financial and military support as U.S. aid becomes increasingly uncertain.
