Trump fast-tracks planning for Putin summit
There has been no “breakthrough,” but there is a “very good prospect” of a summit meeting soon with Russia that could lead to an end to the war in Ukraine, President Donald Trump said after the Aug. 6 meeting between the Kremlin's dictator Vladimir Putin and US envoy Steve Witkoff in Moscow, CNN reported.
Trump declined to comment on the timeline for a deal, saying, "I've been disappointed before with this one."
“That road was long and continues to be long, but there’s a good chance that there will be a meeting very soon,” he said.
Earlier that day, Trump told European leaders in a telephone conversation that he wanted to meet with Putin as soon as next week.
According to White House officials, Putin suggested the summit during his meeting with Witkoff in Moscow. Trump urged his aides to begin planning immediately, a process that normally requires significant time.
Witkoff spent three hours in a meeting with Putin in Moscow two days before the deadline Trump gave the Kremlin to take concrete steps towards ending the war, threatening to impose secondary sanctions on countries purchasing Russian oil.
