Austin and Umerov discuss next Ramstein meeting

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin held a phone call with Ukraine's Minister Rustem Umerov to discuss preparations for the next meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (Ramstein), U.S. Defense Department wrote on its website on Dec. 8.

According to a statement from the U.S. Department of Defense on Dec. 8, Austin and Umerov reviewed recent developments on the battlefield and ongoing U.S. security assistance to Ukraine. Austin emphasized continued support to provide Ukraine with the necessary capabilities to counter Russian aggression.

"They also discussed plans for the upcoming Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting and the continued robust support of Ukraine by its international partners," the statement read.

"Both leaders committed to remaining in close contact."

On Nov. 25, General Christian Freuding, head of the special Ukraine task force at Germany’s Ministry of Defense, hinted at the possibility of an additional Ramstein-format meeting in December.

Previously, Umerov stressed the importance of the Ramstein format for Ukraine and expressed hope for continued support under Donald Trump's administration.
