Ukraine’s infrastructure is ready for F-16 fighters, Air Force Command spokesperson Yuriy Ihnat said on Ukrainian television channel Espreso on April 24.
“There are no issues with infrastructure at all. American aviation has already landed here, including F-15s and F-16s. These planes were at our airfields in 2012 and 2018. We have dozens of different airfields – operational, regular – that can be used for these types of planes,” he said.
There are also sections of Ukrainian highways in Ukraine where the planes could land, he added.
“This is a normal practice in all countries of the world. In a country that is at war, infrastructure must be built. I’ll reveal a little secret – this has been done for a long time,” he said.
A positive decision regarding the transfer of aviation to Ukraine is expected in a matter of one or two months, Ukraine’s Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said previously.
Ukrainian pilots can learn to operate the F-16 in less than six months, said Ukrainian Air Force commander, Serhiy Holubtsov, on March 20.
However, the White House has said that the transfer of F-16s to Ukraine is not currently under consideration.
