A pilot 5G project will be launched in parts of two Ukrainian cities within the next few weeks, Ukraine’s Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov said on Dec. 29, in a video posted on TikTok.

The first pilot 5G tests in Ukraine will be conducted in Lviv, Kharkiv, and Borodianka.

On Aug. 14, Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine officially added Kharkiv and Borodianka to the list of pilot locations, joining Lviv, which had previously been named the country’s first city for 5G testing.

Kharkiv and Borodianka were selected specifically because both have suffered heavy destruction from Russian attacks, making them key sites for testing the resilience of next-generation communications under extreme conditions.

“Very soon — within a few weeks — we will launch 5G in these cities, or rather in certain parts of these cities," Fedorov said.

"This will be the first important step that will later be scaled up.”

The minister stressed that 5G operates on specific frequencies ranges and therefore must be compatible with military aircraft, radar systems, and electronic warfare equipment.

“That’s why we worked on this for a long time and tested everything together with the military. This is why the launch will begin as a pilot project,” Fedorov explained.

He earlier said that by the end of 2026, mobile operators are expected to provide high-quality 4G coverage along all international and national highways. At present, many road sections still lack stable mobile connectivity.

Ukraine plans a gradual transition from 3G to modern mobile standards, including nationwide 4G coverage, by 2030.

The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
