Ukraine slams Duda’s remarks on postwar crime threat

Ukrainian soldiers returning from the frontlines, cannot be viewed as a potential crime threat, the Veterans Affairs Ministry wrote on Feb. 3.

This statement comes as a response to Polish President Andrzej Duda's statement regarding the "risk of rising crime" after Ukrainian veterans return from the front, therefore comparing the situation to Russia in the 1990s or the return of Soviet troops from Afghanistan, that fueled a surge in banditry and firearm-related violence.

"We cannot agree with the Polish leader’s statement, which portrays Ukrainian soldiers as a potential threat," the ministry's statement read.

Ukrainian warriors not only defend our country but also protect all of Europe from Russian aggression."

The ministry highlighted that comparing Ukraine and Russia is inaccurate. Ukrainian soldiers are defenders who protect their homeland from an aggressor, not a source of danger.

"Ukrainian soldiers and veterans are not a threat but a guarantee of stability and security for Ukraine, Poland, and all of Europe," the statement added.

"They are the ones risking their lives for peace and freedom, and they deserve the highest respect and support."

The ministry acknowledged that challenges exist in reintegrating military personnel into civilian life. However, it assured that work is already underway to establish an effective support system for returning veterans.

The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.

Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.

For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
