Ukraine is continuing to strengthen the whole of its border with Belarus and is preparing for any eventuality, the spokesman of the State Border Guard Service Andriy Demchenko said on Ukrainian national television on Dec. 13.

Currently, border guards are bolstering defenses on the border in areas from Volyn to Chernihiv, building defenses, and installing surveillance and recording equipment, "in order to know in advance what is happening in the border area on the other side in proximity to the state border."

Demchenko said it was necessary to prepare for different possible developments, as Russia was continuing to carry out attacks on Ukraine through the territory of neighboring Belarus.

"Our attention is focused on the so-called regional grouping of the allied state, which is deployed by Russia together with Belarus,” Demchenko said.

“Therefore, all the Defense Forces, all components of the Defense Forces — border guards, the Armed Forces, and the National Guard — are doing everything necessary to strengthen both the border line and the border area.”

On Dec. 7, it was reported that Belarus had announced it was moving troops and military equipment closer to the border, citing a "counter-terrorist threat".

Then, on Dec. 13, Belarus launched a surprise inspection of the combat readiness of its troops.

The U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War has said it considers it unlikely that Belarus will enter the war against Ukraine.
