The Third Army Corps of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is being formed on the basis of the existing Third Separate Assault Brigade, Maksym Zhorin, the brigade's deputy commander, told Radio NV on March 20.

"After the command is formed, other brigades that are already operational and performing combat tasks will be integrated into this corps," he said, adding that several new units will have to be created from scratch.

While Zhorin did not reveal which specific brigades will be part of the newly formed corps, he stressed that it will be based on these existing units.

The formation of the corps will allow for more effective coordination and deployment of troops, giving the corps commander a "wider area of responsibility" that "has several brigades, several separate units - artillery, unmanned aerial vehicles, engineers - that he can already operate on the basis of the current situation.”

The corps will be able to reinforce its units, redeploy troops, and organize rotations as needed.

On Feb. 3, President Zelenskyy announced that a plan to transition the Armed Forces to a new organizational structure involving corps creation had been approved.

On March 13, the 3rd Assault Brigade announced it had officially become the 3rd Army Corps under the command of Andrii Biletskyi.

On March 16, while commenting on the appointment of Andrii Hnatov as Chief of Ukraine’s General Staff, Zelenskyy stated that one of Hnatov’s key tasks would be actively developing the corps system.

The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.

Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.
