US extended Russia sanctions for another year
The U.S. government has extended the sanctions against Russia for another year, as announced in a document published on the U.S. Federal Register website on Feb. 27.
According to the document, the sanctions, initially imposed in 2014 in response to the occupation annexation of Crimea, military aggression against Ukraine, and the full-scale invasion in 2022, will remain in effect. All restrictions placed on the Russian government under the relevant executive orders have been extended.
The prior executive order states that Russia's actions and policies toward Ukraine "undermine democratic processes and threaten its peace, security, stability, sovereignty, and territorial integrity."
On Feb. 20, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the issue of easing sanctions on Russia could be considered during negotiations regarding the war in Ukraine. According to him, Washington is prepared to either tighten or ease sanctions depending on Russia's willingness to negotiate.
On Feb. 19, Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the U.S. administration will not lift sanctions against Russia until an agreement to end the war in Ukraine is reached.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
