China supports Trump’s plan to resolve Ukraine crisis, calls for dialogue
China has expressed support for former U.S. President Donald Trump's intention to resolve the "Ukraine crisis" and stated its willingness to maintain communication with all parties involved, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Jan. 24.
According to Mao, resolving the war in Ukraine requires "dialogue and negotiations." She also addressed Trump’s remarks at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he suggested China could assist in ending Russia’s war against Ukraine.
"We welcome all parties playing a constructive role and creating conditions for de-escalation and a political resolution of the crisis. China will continue to promote peace talks and remains ready to maintain communication with other parties," Mao said.
In response to a question about whether Chinese President Xi Jinping had discussed Russia's war in Ukraine with Trump, Mao emphasized: "China will stay committed to advancing peace negotiations and is ready to maintain communication with all sides."
She added that there are "significant shared interests and broad opportunities for cooperation between China and the United States," noting that the two nations could strengthen dialogue and consultations in this direction.
On Jan. 17, reports revealed that Xi held a phone conversation with Trump. On Jan. 23, Trump announced plans to establish productive cooperation with China, expressing hope that Beijing would influence Moscow to stop its war against Ukraine.
Trump noted that during the recent phone call, which Xi initiated, they discussed the potential for cooperation to end Russian aggression.
Separately, on Jan. 21, Xi spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin. In a video released by the Kremlin, Putin referred to Xi as his "dear friend" and highlighted the need to "review achievements over the past period and outline new plans for developing the comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction between Russia and China."
The conversation between Putin and Xi took place just one day after Trump assumed the U.S. presidency.
