Russian soldiers ordered to kill Ukrainian POWs, but end up surrendering instead
Two Ukrainian soldiers, who were on the verge of being executed by Russians, managed to persuade them to surrender instead, journalist and editor-in-chief of Censor.NET Yuriy Butusov reported on April 27.
He shared this story in his Facebook post.
The two Ukrainian paratroopers, operating on Russian territory during a massive assault, were captured by two Russian soldiers who suddenly appeared at their position.
“In a small shelter, the four of them sat together for several days," Butusov wrote.
"Around them, drones, artillery, and mortars were constantly striking. The Russians reported to their command that they captured Ukrainians and received an order — to kill the prisoners and move forward.”
However, the Russians failed to carry out the criminal order and decided instead to try to lead the Ukrainian soldiers into captivity. But Russian artillery immediately began firing on them — a reminder, Butusov noted, that Russian commanders often target their own troops who refuse to press forward.
“At that point, the captured Ukrainians suggested that the Russian soldiers surrender, assuring them that Ukrainian commanders do not shoot either their own or enemy prisoners — and that their lives will be guaranteed," Butusov explained.
"The Russians agreed — their comrades who had joined the assault could no longer be contacted. It turned out that the only chance for them to survive was offered by their Ukrainian captives.”
He added that the Russians returned the weapons and radios to the Ukrainian paratroopers, who then contacted their command and, at a suitable moment, led the Russian soldiers to a rear position where they surrendered.
