City workers in Kyiv are repairing infrastructure damaged in Russian strikes overnight on Jan. 9, with crews working around the clock, Mayor Vitalii Klitschko said, releasing video of the repairs on Jan. 11.
“We are now at one of Kyiv’s damaged infrastructure facilities. Our municipal workers are working day and night to eliminate the damage and restore heat supply. It is difficult work,” the mayor said, adding that people have to work in low air temperatures.
According to Klitschko, “there is a lot of work to be done.”
Earlier on Jan. 11, Klitschko said that as of the morning, more than 1,000 buildings in the capital remained without heating following Russia’s massive attack overnight into Jan. 9.
Deputy Prime Minister for the Restoration of Ukraine Oleksii Kuleba said that about 85% of high-rise buildings that had been left without heating already have heat.
“All city boiler houses are operating. Specialists are restarting systems and bleeding the networks so that heat is supplied evenly to apartments,” he said.
Overnight into Jan. 9, Russia carried out a massive strike on Kyiv, killing four people, including a medic, and injuring 25.
The city experienced disruptions to electricity, heating and water supplies. Mayor Vitalii Klitschko said that half of Kyiv’s apartment buildings — nearly 6,000 — were left without heating, and he urged residents to leave the city if possible.
