NATO fighters shoot down drone that flew into Latvia (Photo: NBS / X)
NATO fighter jets shot down a drone that entered Latvian airspace overnight on Aug. 13-14, Latvia’s National Armed Forces said on X.
The drone was downed over Rugāji in Balvi Municipality, Iveta Bērziņa, a representative of the Latvian Armed Forces Joint Headquarters, told Delfi.
Experts are currently examining the area where the drone crashed, Bērziņa said.
The aircraft was shot down at high altitude, meaning debris may be scattered across a large area, Delfi reported.
Latvia’s military previously said the drone entered the country’s airspace as a result of Russian electronic warfare activity.
NATO fighter jets participating in the Baltic Air Policing mission were scrambled in response to the threat.
On June 8, NATO fighters shot down a drone that had entered Latvian airspace for the first time.
Separately, during Russia’s large-scale attack on Ukraine on the evening of Aug. 10, a drone entered Moldovan airspace from Odesa Oblast.
Moldova’s Defense Ministry said the aircraft’s characteristics resembled those of a Russian Geran-3 drone.
