Russia redeploys fresh troops via Mariupol to reinforce Zaporizhzhya front

Russian forces have stepped up the transfer of troops and equipment, often without tactical markings, through the occupied city of Mariupol, Petro Andriushchenko, Center for the Study of Occupation head, reported on Sept. 29.
“On the Zaporizhzhya axis, Russian units are arriving in organized columns of 10–15 vehicles," Andriushchenko wrote.
"This shows a centralized effort to reinforce the grouping — likely to stabilize the defense and offset ongoing losses.”
On the Novopavlivka axis, he noted an influx of timber and logs, indicating that Russian forces are working to fortify their positions.
“Northern Donetsk Oblast remains the dominant redeployment direction, mostly consisting of newly mobilized units moved after only brief training in camps,” he added.
Andriushchenko said that the use of unmarked vehicles suggests either an attempt to hide the scale of the buildup or a lack of time and resources for proper markings.
“In the end, we can say the front is moving again, and this is clearly reflected in the redeployments,” he explained.
He also reported that throughout the week Russian forces hauled damaged equipment almost daily from the Zaporizhzhya axis for repairs at the Illich Steelworks (metallurgical plant - ed.) in occupied Mariupol.
According to the latest report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russian forces have failed to advance in Sumy Oblast and face logistical challenges near Pokrovsk as well as manpower shortages on the Donetsk–Dnipropetrovsk axis.
