Russian milbloggers debunk Kremlin claims of safe Crimea supply highway — ISW

Russian milbloggers contradicted Kremlin claims of complete control over the critical M-14 Rostov–Crimea highway, confirming that Ukraine continues to hit targets along the land bridge, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) wrote on July 20.
Controversy erupted following a televised meeting between Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and Yevgeny Balitsky, the Moscow-appointed proxy head of occupied Zaporizhzhya Oblast. At the briefing, Balitsky claimed that Russian forces had established "full control" over the M-14 highway (designated by occupation authorities as the R-280), substantially suppressed Ukrainian drone capabilities along the sector, and secured all energy assets against long-range strikes.
However, ISW analysts observed that Balitsky's declarations triggered immediate and sharp pushback from Russian pro-war commentators. One prominent blogger called Balitsky's statements false, noting that Ukrainian forces regularly strike transport on the M-14, which has significantly driven up commercial insurance rates for fuel tankers traveling to occupied Crimea.
Another Kremlin-aligned blogger admitted that while civilian transport strikes on the route had recently decreased, the drop was driven by drivers abandoning the highway due to persistent Ukrainian drone threats rather than effective Russian air defense measures.
ISW logged at least four confirmed Ukrainian strikes along the M-14 between July 1 and July 20, following an intensive interdiction campaign executed throughout May and June 2026.
According to ISW analysts, Ukrainian strikes forced the Russian military command to redeploy additional operational assets — including specialized drone operators and interceptor UAVs — to guard the corridor, successfully disrupting one of the primary ground lines of communication between Russia and occupied Crimea.
Ukraine's systematic interdiction campaign
The latest analytical findings align with updates issued by Ukrainian military leadership tracking the disruption of southern supply corridors:
Systemic Interdiction: In early June, Head of the Presidential Office Kyrylo Budanov clarified that drone strikes along the southern land corridor form part of a sustained, systematic campaign rather than a temporary operation. He emphasized that severing this logistical artery severely complicates Russian military planning across the southern front.
Traffic Drops: On June 9, Commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces Robert Brovdi ("Magyar") reported that Russian military commanders officially prohibited military trucks from using the main highway to Crimea due to non-stop drone strikes. Brovdi noted that military freight traffic along the M-14 dropped by 71%, forcing occupation forces to rely on longer detour routes.
