Russia refocuses attacks on Ukraine’s power grid

Recent Russian air strikes have targeted Ukrainian generation capacity and power grid facilities ahead of the coming winter, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sept. 8.
The president made the statement after chairing a meeting on air defense with senior military commanders.
“This meeting was mainly about defending our critical infrastructure, especially the energy sector,” Zelenskyy said in his evening address.
“The Russians are again concentrating their attacks on our energy. Of course, we have responses now, and more will come, but the main priority is keeping our [energy] system stable.”
He said the meeting also included reports on Ukraine’s drone production.
“The reports covered drone quality and production volumes; I thank all manufacturers who are increasing their deliveries, especially of long-range systems,” he said.
In a report on Aug. 27, the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War said Russia has resumed air strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in an apparent effort to undermine Kyiv’s resolve ahead of the winter of 2025.
Earlier on Sept. 8, dozens of Russian kamikaze drones attacked a thermal power plant in Kyiv Oblast, causing immediate disruptions in power supply in the region. Ukraine’s largest power utility company DTEK later warned that citizens must be ready for emergency blackouts this fall, presuming the enemy attacks continue.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
