Russia's war losses

In early January, Ukraine’s Defense Ministry reported that the AFU had eliminated 430,790 Russian troops in 2024 alone. This is equivalent to approximately 36 motorized rifle divisions of the Russian army.

On Jan. 10, the BBC reported that since the full-scale invasion began, Russia has lost at least 6,083 elite soldiers.

On Jan. 23, The New York Times wrote that Russia’s losses are twice as high as Ukraine’s, but Moscow still maintains an advantage. Citing military experts, the publication noted that after nearly three years of full-scale war, Ukraine may have suffered approximately half of Russia's total irrecoverable losses.

On Feb. 3, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry reported that Russia’s irrecoverable and sanitary losses in January 2025 alone amounted to 48,240 soldiers.

On Feb. 4, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported that Russia is likely struggling to recruit enough new troops, as its monthly draft levels barely match or fall short of its losses in Ukraine.

The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.

Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.

For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
