Russia continues slow modernization of Tu-160 bombers

Russia continues upgrading its Tupolev Tu-160 strategic bombers, although modernizing a single aircraft appears to take the Russian defense industry roughly five years, Defense Blog reported on May 11.
Footage of the upgraded bomber with tail number 8-04 Dynekin was published by the Russian Telegram channel Flight Bomber.
According to the report, six upgraded Tu-160M bombers and three newly built Tu-160M2 aircraft have now been confirmed.
Analytical resource AviVector, which tracks open-source aviation data, estimates that only seven out of Russia’s 18 Tu-160M bombers regularly conduct combat sorties.
The aircraft typically operate from the Ukrainka air base in Russia’s Far East or from Engels-2 air base in Saratov Oblast.
Analysts also estimate that between seven and nine Tu-160 aircraft remain in workshops at the Kazan Aviation Production Association, undergoing modernization or construction at various stages.
Satellite imagery dated March 18 reportedly confirms that Russia is continuing work on the modernization program, though progress appears slow.
The report notes that Moscow first announced plans to resume Tu-160 production in the mid-2010s. Construction of a new production facility in Kazan began in 2020 and appears to have become operational only in early 2026.
The pace of new aircraft production remains unclear.
Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said on May 11 that Russian forces have already modernized the Kh-101 strategic cruise missile at least four times in an effort to improve its ability to penetrate Ukrainian air defenses.
