Russian military bloggers are openly conceding Ukrainian counterattacks near Lyman while criticizing the Russian command's chronic practice of filing false battlefield reports, the ISW reported on Sept. 9.
Russian military bloggers stated that the posture of Russian forces around Lyman is deteriorating, forcing occupation troops to abandon several forward positions, though they did not detail the exact sectors. One milblogger highlighted that Ukrainian forces have staged counterattacks across this axis for several months, even as Russian commanders and blogger maps manufactured a "significantly more optimistic picture."
According to the blogger, so-called "pretty reports" — the community's term for fabricated frontline summaries — "must be completely banned." Amid this, Ukrainian forces recently demonstrated undisputed control over Svyatohirsk northwest of Lyman, just days after Russian dictator Vladimir Putin falsely claimed Russian troops controlled the town, the Institute for the Study of War wrote.
Russian milbloggers acknowledged Ukraine's visual debunking of Putin's propaganda regarding Svyatohirsk and are increasingly venting frustration over misleading claims by Russian officials about territorial advances, especially on the Lyman axis, the analysts added.
ISW noted that the exact scale of frontline shifts in the Lyman sector remains indeterminate due to limited open-source verification concerning recent Ukrainian counteroffensive actions. The think tank emphasized that its conservative mapping methodology likely underestimates the true extent of Ukrainian advances in the area. As fresh open-source intelligence surfaces, analysts will be able to delineate the liberated territory with greater precision.
On Sept. 8, reports revealed that the Armed Forces of Ukraine initiated counteroffensive operations near Lyman in Donetsk Oblast as early as May, which OSINT analyst Clément Molin noted had remained strictly classified for four months.
According to Molin's assessment, Ukrainian troops liberated several settlements, severed an exposed Russian salient, and drove occupying units back across the Zherebets River. Informed BBC sources confirmed that the offensive operation is taking place, noting that operations remain ongoing.
