Russia targets building near EU delegation in Kyiv
Russians deliberately struck a building near the European Union delegation in Kyiv overnight, severely damaging the structure and offices where staff live, EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarina Mathernova said on Aug. 28.
“Night of horror in Kyiv. Sirens wailed for 12 hours straight. The attack also hit our building, the EU Delegation!” she wrote on Facebook.
She said none of her colleagues were injured and all are safe.
Maternova noted that last night the war “touched the European Union directly,” adding that she believes this was the intent of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
“No one is safe. Not families in their homes. Not children in their beds. Not those representing the EU in Kyiv. Putin stops at nothing. He bombs, destroys, kills. This is not a military operation. This is terror,” Mathernova said.
Earlier on Aug. 28, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha reported that the EU Delegation building was damaged during Russia’s night of massive strikes on Kyiv. The British Council office was also hit.
On the night of Aug. 28, Russian forces carried out a combined attack on Ukraine using 629 air attack weapons — Kinzhal, Iskander, and Kh-101 missiles, as well as Shahed drones. Air defenses intercepted 589 missiles and drones.
Kyiv suffered one of its most massive attacks in recent times. According to the Kyiv City Military Administration, 14 people were killed, including three children aged 2, 14, and 17. Thirty-eight people were injured, and 10 are reported missing, according to the Interior Ministry.
The aftermath has been recorded at 20 sites across seven districts — buildings, offices, retail spaces, a kindergarten, and vehicles were damaged. In the Darnytskyi district, Russian strikes destroyed part of a five-story residential building. Extensive damage was also reported in the city center.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
