Ukraine continues to build out a multilayered air defense system to counter Russia’s Iranian-designed Shahed UAVs attacking Ukrainian cities nightly, Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said on Sept. 4.
At a meeting with senior commanders overseeing the nation’s air defense, Syrskyi outlined plans to train more drone interceptor crews and equip them with better weapons and radar systems.
“Our common goal is to create an echeloned system against enemy Shaheds and Gerans,” he said.
During the meeting, commanders reported on the performance of UAV-interceptor units, prospects for acquiring various drone types, measures to boost effectiveness against strike and reconnaissance drones, and proposals to resolve existing challenges. At its conclusion, Syrskyi ordered intensified efforts to shore up defenses against kamikaze drones.
“Air defense is a priority for the state, the armed forces and me personally,” he said.
“The security of our rear depends on the reliability of our anti-Shahed system and missile defense. We are continuing to recruit personnel for interceptor UAV crews and forming new units.”
On July 25, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy directed domestic manufacturers to reach a production rate of at least 1,000 interceptor drones per day.
In early August, Reuters reported that Ukraine is assembling a swarm of interceptor drones to counter Russian UAVs mid-air.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.
For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
