Ukrainian Army updates training for troops in support roles
Ukraine’s Armed Forces are rolling out changes to their Basic General Military Training (BGMT) program that will ease requirements for soldiers serving in support and non-combat roles, the General Staff announced on April 15.
According to the update, the reform was approved by Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief and is designed to reduce the burden on personnel assigned to logistics, communications, medical units, security, recruitment centers, military academies, and other support services.
Beginning May 1, troops in these categories will undergo a revamped training program with three major changes:
Training will be reduced to one month, down from 45 days
Physical requirements will be lowered
Specialized training units (platoons or companies) will be formed for this purpose
The changes will apply both to newly drafted personnel and those who are retraining—such as individuals previously trained at military departments or undergoing BGMT again for various reasons.
The General Staff clarified that this update primarily concerns service members once labeled “limited fit” for duty. Following legislative reforms, this group now serves exclusively in rear-area units based on the decisions of military medical commissions.
Officials said the new approach is meant to streamline training for this specific group, reduce the intensity of the program, and align with recommendations from the Presidential Commissioner for Soldiers’ Rights. It also aims to help fill gaps in critical rear-area support units.
