Ukrainian defenders hit the command post of Russia’s 6th Motor Rifle Division near the temporarily occupied city of Bakhmut in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine’s General Staff reported on May 4.

The strike took place "recently," according to the military’s statement.

“As a result of the strike, the Russian occupation forces’ ability to coordinate operations in the Pokrovsk sector has been significantly reduced,” the General Staff said. “Enemy losses are currently being clarified.”

Ukrainian forces continue to hold back Russian offensive operations in the area and are inflicting heavy losses, the statement added.

Bakhmut, once a major battlefield in eastern Ukraine, fell to Russian forces in spring 2023 after months of brutal fighting. The city has been almost completely destroyed.

On April 27, 2025, reports emerged that occupying Russian forces had draped the ruins of Bakhmut with tricolor flags and banners commemorating World War II. Most of the Russian propaganda material has been concentrated in the city center, with “80 Years of Victory” posters hung next to shattered apartment blocks.

The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.

Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.

For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
