Ukraine intercepts 46 Shahed drones in massive overnight attack
In the early hours of Jan. 9, the Russian military launched 70 Shahed-131/136 kamikaze drones and various decoy drones against Ukraine. Ukrainian Air Force reported on Telegram that air defense forces shot down 46 enemy drones.
Additionally, 24 decoy drones were lost without causing any damage, according to the Air Force.
The drones were launched from multiple locations in Russia, including Millerovo, Orel, Kursk, Bryansk, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk.
The air assault was countered by aviation, anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare units, and mobile fire groups from Ukraine’s Air Force and Defense Forces.
Air defense systems were active in Poltava, Sumy, Kharkiv, Cherkasy, Chernihiv, Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, and Mykolaiv oblasts.
Despite successful interceptions, debris from downed drones damaged private homes in Kharkiv, Sumy, and Cherkasy oblasts.
The overnight attack triggered air raid alerts across several regions as Russian forces launched waves of kamikaze drones against Ukraine.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.
For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
