Ukraine says Chongar Bridge fully disabled after second strike

Russian war

Ukrainian forces said they had successfully struck the Chongar Bridge for a second time, leaving one of Russia’s key supply routes to occupied Crimea unusable.

The overnight attack on June 9 completely disabled the bridge, according to the press service of the 1st Separate Assault Regiment named after Dmytro Kotsiubailo.

“Can we do it again? We already did,” the unit said in a statement, adding that the strike was carried out jointly by the Phalanx Center for Multidomain Operations, the 1st Separate Assault Regiment, and the 475th Separate Assault Regiment Code 9.2.

The operation employed Ukrainian-made FP-2 attack drones.

According to the regiment, an initial strike on June 7 damaged one side of the bridge deck. The follow-up attack rendered the crossing fully inoperable, forcing a long-term closure of traffic along the route.

“The bridge has been completely taken out of service,” the unit said.

The Chongar Bridge links occupied Crimea with Russian-controlled areas of southern Ukraine and has long served as a critical logistics artery for Moscow’s forces operating in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia oblasts.

Earlier on June 9, Russian-installed occupation official Vladimir Saldo confirmed that the bridge had come under another Ukrainian attack.

The first strike on June 7 involved FP-2 drones and a newly developed long-range attack drone known as Behemoth. The operation was carried out by Phalanx Center operators together with the 1st Separate Assault Regiment and the 475th Separate Assault Regiment Code 9.2.

According to Ukrainian defense outlet Militarnyi, the June 7 attack marked the first known combat use of the Behemoth drone, which was publicly unveiled in late May by Ukrainian companies GLEFA and Culver Aerospace.

The Behemoth visually resembles Iran-designed Shahed drones but belongs to the category of medium-range strike drones intended for attacks against targets at short and medium distances.

Its reported range reaches up to 300 kilometers (186 miles). The drone has a wingspan of 2.28 meters, a length of 2.2 meters, and a height of 0.5 meters.

Developers say it can operate in fully autonomous, semi-autonomous, and FPV modes. One of its key features is the ability to fly at extremely low altitudes, making detection and interception by air defense systems more difficult.

The attack comes as Ukraine intensifies efforts to disrupt Russian logistics routes linking occupied Crimea with front-line forces in southern Ukraine.
