Kyiv missile attack kills 23, among them doctor, singer, and schoolchild

Among those killed in the Russian attack on Aug. 28 were 2-year-old Anрelina and her 24-year-old mother Nadiya; 17-year-old student Maryna Hryshko; Yana Shapoval, mother of a 10-year-old boy; 14-year-old schoolboy Nazariy Koval; rehabilitation and physical medicine doctor and neurologist Oksana Protsyuk; Olena Chala; and Vira Tulupova, a member of the Hromytsia Folk Song and Dance Ensemble.

Maryna Hryshko, a third-year student at the Kyiv Energy Vocational College, lived in the Darnytskyi district; her father, a serviceman, and his wife had to identify her body after the attack.

Olena Chala sustained shrapnel wounds while running to shelter in the Holosiivskyi district. “Olena Chala, beautiful, charming, and full of life, a friend of my daughter and our family, was killed on the way to the bomb shelter by deadly shrapnel. Russia killed her!” said Elena Abessinova, recalling Chala’s help with delivering packages from Norway to her elderly father.

Nazariy Koval, 14, studied in the 8-B class at Lyceum No. 127 in Darnytskyi district. The school described him as “a bright, joyful child who dreamed and made plans for the future. His life was cut short by this brutal war.”

Vira Tulupova, known as the heart and soul of the Hromytsia ensemble, was described by colleagues as “a charming woman and incredibly talented person. Her loss is irreparable for Kyiv’s folk amateur arts.”

Yana Shapoval, who lived on the fifth floor of an apartment building in Darnytskyi district that was destroyed by a Russian missile, was killed while her husband and son survived and are hospitalized. Her mother, Kateryna, learned of the tragedy after visiting the ruins.

Oksana Protsyuk, a neurologist at the Kyiv City Clinical Hospital No. 1 rehabilitation center, also died. Colleagues remembered her as “not only an excellent doctor and professional, a caring wife and mother, but also a true friend and support for her patients. Her honesty, kindness, responsibility, and wisdom inspired us daily. Her life was full of love and a desire to help everyone who turned to her.”
