The vessel was hit in the area near the northern edge of Oman's Musandam Peninsula, according to the UKMTO. A map released by the maritime agency shows the tanker was located near a vital shipping lane through the strait.
The strike occurred on May 3 — before U.S. President Donald Trump's statement that U.S. Central Command forces will begin escorting ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
"All crew members are safe, no environmental impact has been reported. The incident is being investigated," the UKMTO wrote, noting that vessels transiting the area are advised to exercise caution.
The incident occurred amid growing tensions around the Strait of Hormuz — one of the key maritime routes for global energy shipments. Trump earlier announced the U.S. intention to escort vessels through the Strait following appeals from countries whose ships were blocked or under threat.
Trump stated that he was "not satisfied" with Iran's latest proposal, without detailing exactly which elements he opposes, on May 1.
"They are asking for things that I cannot agree to," he told reporters at the White House.
Washington has repeatedly stated it will not end the war without an agreement that prevents Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. In turn, Iran claims its nuclear program is peaceful in nature.
Tehran believes its "latest proposal to postpone nuclear talks to a later stage" is a significant shift aimed at reaching an agreement, a senior Iranian official told Reuters on the condition of anonymity.
According to this proposal, the war will end with a guarantee that Israel and the United States will not attack again, Iran will open the strait, and the United States will lift its blockade.
Later negotiations should concern limiting Iran's nuclear program in exchange for lifting sanctions, with Iran demanding that Washington recognize its right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes, even if it agrees to halt enrichment.
"Within this framework, negotiations on the more complex nuclear issue have been moved to the final stage to create a more favorable atmosphere," the Iranian official stated.
Tehran no longer demands the lifting of the blockade as a precondition for starting a dialogue, according to The Wall Street Journal. Instead, Iran proposes simultaneously discussing the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, security guarantees, and its nuclear program.
Iran has made it clear through intermediaries that it is ready to hold a new round of talks in Pakistan as early as next week if Washington accepts the new proposal as a basis for dialogue, according to the WSJ.
Trump informed Congress about the end of the war with Iran, Politico reported. This is linked to the 60-day deadline, after which a military operation must be terminated without separate approval from lawmakers.
