Russia attacked Ukraine on February 24. May 30 is the 96th day of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. The invading army initially attempted to advance from the north, east and south, using artillery and aircraft to shell peaceful cities all over Ukraine.
Since the first days of the ongoing war, the worst of the Russian army’s atrocities were committed in Bucha, to the north-west of the capital Kyiv, and in the south-eastern port city of Mariupol, while the situation has also been tragic in the Kharkiv, Chernihiv, and in the Russian-occupied city of Kherson. For more than a month Russia also shelled the capital Kyiv, having destroyed a number of residential areas on the outskirts of Ukrainian capital city – Irpin, Borodyanka, Makariv, and Bucha.
So far, the Russian army has trying to get full control over Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, parts of which it has controlled since the war began in 2014.
Besides that, the Russian army has managed to establish control over parts of Zaporizhzhya, Kherson and Kharkiv oblasts. In some areas the Ukrainian army is conducting counter-offensive operations, with the most successful one being in Kharkiv Oblast.
On April 22, the Russian Federation declared beginning of the "second stage" of its invasion of Ukraine, which it said would be focused on gaining full control over the Donbas area and southern Ukraine.
So far, it has made little progress in gaining its objectives.
