The Armenian government has approved a draft law to initiate the process of joining the European Union, News.am reported on Jan. 9.

Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan stated that in recent years, the country’s relationship with the EU has been “intense and dynamic.”

“These relations have been very comprehensive, covering various areas. The European Union has repeatedly expressed strong political support for Armenian democracy. The EU has also played a role in ensuring security around Armenia, including the deployment of a civilian monitoring mission,” Mirzoyan said.

He highlighted that the EU has rich democratic traditions, a competitive free market, and a modern economy.

The bill will now be sent to parliament. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan noted that the decision on joining the EU can only be made through a nationwide referendum.

On March 8, 2024, Mirzoyan stated that Armenia was considering applying for EU membership due to strained relations with Russia.

The European Parliament has indicated that the EU is ready for a "transformation of relations" with Armenia if the country seeks candidate status.

On Sept. 9, the European Union began talks with Armenia on visa liberalization.
