How Ukraine’s homegrown smart defense innovations are reshaping frontline warfare — NV

Ukraine has transitioned from a recipient of foreign military assistance into a vital net provider of security and technological innovation for NATO and the European Union, NATO Deputy Secretary General Radmila Šekerinska said at a recent European Council security briefing, as domestic defense production reaches an estimated $50 billion to $55 billion.
At the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion, Ukraine’s domestic defense industrial base generated approximately $1 billion annually.
By June 2025, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy projected annual defense industrial capacity at over $35 billion, a figure that has now surged to $50–55 billion. The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) characterized this expansion — particularly in uncrewed systems — as one of the fastest industrial transformations in modern military history.
Beyond modernizing legacy Soviet stockpiles, Ukraine’s defense sector is producing bespoke, combat-ready systems. Over the past year, the Ministry of Defense codified more than 1,300 domestically designed weapons for military service, while the Brave1 defense-tech cluster registered over 5,000 developments spanning FPV drones, electronic warfare (EW) systems, cruise missiles, and uncrewed surface vessels (USVs).
U.S. defense contractors have partnered to manufacture Ukrainian-designed Magura naval drones under license, while Ukrainian interceptor drones priced at approximately $2,000 have attracted procurement interest from the U.S. and Gulf states.
"Ukrainians are the world leaders in unmanned technologies," noted Keith Kellogg, former special envoy to the U.S. President, during a recent visit to Kyiv.
Based on consultations with defense engineers and military analysts, NV selected four breakthrough domestic systems developed directly in response to urgent frontline operational challenges.
Automated Drone Killer: Khyzhak (Predator) AI Turret
In late 2024, Ukrainian engineers completed testing on an automated machine-gun turret designed to neutralize FPV strike drones autonomously. Developed by UGV Robotics — the manufacturer behind the Lyut (Fury) uncrewed ground vehicle (UGV) — Khyzhak combat module tracks and eliminates incoming aerial targets without manual operator aiming.
The system combines optical and thermal imaging cameras, a laser rangefinder, and custom computer-vision neural networks. The software calculates target trajectory, range, and predictive lead points before dual-axis electric motors align the barrel, requiring human input only to authorize weapons discharge. Gyro-stabilization enables the module to engage aerial threats on the move, allowing integration onto armored fighting vehicles, robotic ground platforms, and naval drones.
Mounted on the 330-kilogram (728 lb) armored Lyut UGV, the module pairs with a 7.62 mm PKT machine gun holding 550 rounds, providing an effective engagement range of up to 800 meters and a 72-hour operational endurance.
Deployed to the front line since late March 2026, dozens of Lyut-Khyzhak systems are now in service, having intercepted hundreds of enemy drones. Operating at a fraction of the cost of foreign systems like the $450k American Bullfrog turret, Khyzhak represents the world's first combat-deployed autonomous anti-drone ground turret.
Remote Magnetic Sapper: Pydryv Demining Rig
To counter Russia’s widespread deployment of electronic and magnetic-fused landmines, Trinity Robotics — the manufacturer of the Konyk ONE UGV — developed Pydryv, a remote magnetic mine-clearing module.
Trinity Robotics produces 60 Konyk ONE units monthly, with plans to scale production to 150 units. Over 20 Defense Forces units employ these robots for frontline logistics and casualty evacuation, each carrying up to 300 kilograms (660 lbs) with connectivity managed via LTE, Starlink, and digital radio networks. In March 2026 alone, Ukrainian units executed over 9,000 ground robotic sorties.
However, magnetic-fused mines — such as the PTM-3, PTM-4, and TM-62/TM-72 series equipped with MVN-72 and MVN-80 fuzes that detonate underneath the vehicle profile — inflicted significant robotic losses.
Pydryv addresses this threat using an 80-kilogram (176 lb) vehicle-mounted magnetic emulator that projects a false electromagnetic signature 3 to 8 meters ahead of the moving robot, triggering mine detonations before the platform reaches the blast zone. The system functions at speeds up to 30 km/h (with a maximum operational limit of 65 km/h) and requires no active operator adjustments. Following operational testing, Trinity Robotics is finalizing state codification to clear the module for military procurement before the end of the year.
Active Air Defense for Armor: The CD MT-1 Radar
To protect heavy armor against fiber-optic and radio-controlled FPV drones, Ukrainian defense firm Fly Group developed the CD MT-1 compact radar, a vehicular active defense system designed for tanks and self-propelled artillery.
Unlike passive cage armor ("cope cages") or electronic warfare jammers, the CD MT-1 relies on a phased-array radar linked to a kinetic interception system. The radar detects incoming aerial targets regardless of weather conditions or visual camouflage, cues an optical verification camera, and directs a kinetic launcher to fire a specialized shotgun-style three-fragment round at a range of 75 to 100 meters.
Designed without restricted foreign export-controlled components, the interceptor suite is projected to enter the market around October with an estimated system cost of $15k.
Tactical Thermal Vision: The Kurbas-640 Optical Sensor
To give night-interceptor drone pilots an edge over Shahed loitering munitions, Kyiv-based manufacturer Odd Systems engineered the Kurbas-640 thermal imaging camera. Founded by Petcube creator Yaroslav Azhnyuk, the company partnered with Danish defense firm Terma in summer 2025 to develop AI-guided interceptors.
Kurbas-640 features a 640x512 resolution sensor with a 12-micron pixel pitch and thermal sensitivity below 40 millikelvins, optimized specifically for Ukraine's regional atmospheric moisture and frontline conditions. Integrating the sensor onto day-configured FPV drones like the Lupynis-10 raises unit costs from $435 (18k UAH) to $920 (38k UAH).
The next-generation Kurbas-640 Beta includes tailored presets for air-to-air drone hunting, ground tracking, and all-weather navigation, along with built-in electromagnetic interference shielding. The system’s architecture allows frontline units and drone manufacturers to program custom image profiles directly into the firmware within days of receiving operational feedback.
