Canada and Ukraine have finalized an agreement to supply critical air defense interceptor missiles through the JUMPSTART program, worth CAD350 million ($255 million), Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Sept. 10.

“As we meet today, Russia is intensifying its barbaric air war, indiscriminately attacking civilians,” Carney said at a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“Ukraine’s air defenses are becoming increasingly important. That is why Canada and Ukraine today finalized an agreement to supply critical air defense interceptor missiles through the JUMPSTART mechanism.”

Carney said the equipment package would help protect the Ukrainian people, the country’s infrastructure and its skies.

Zelenskyy and Carney also signed a declaration on a 100-year partnership between Ukraine and Canada on Sept. 10. The declaration expresses the countries’ intention to elevate bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his wife, First Lady Olena Zelenska, arrived in Canada on Sept. 9 for a visit scheduled to last through Sept. 11.
