A series of explosions in the Russian city of Penza disabled the country’s main trunk oil pipeline system, NV sources in Ukraine’s military intelligence (HUR) reported on Sept. 9.

At least four blasts occurred around 4 a.m. in the Zheleznodorozhny district of Penza, damaging two major gas pipeline lines with a total capacity of 2 million barrels per day.

Additionally, the same location saw damage to two more regionally significant pipelines, the sources added.

Hours after the explosions, Russian local media attempted to conceal the incident by reporting so-called “planned drills” at oil and gas sites in cooperation with emergency and special services. Officials called on residents to remain calm and ignore reports of explosions on local channels.

Ukrainian intelligence noted that the pipelines affected were critical to the operation of Russian military sites involved in the ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
