Russian drones, fires, destruction and injuries mark New Year’s Day in Kyiv

At least four people were injured in a Russian drone attack on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported on Telegram early on the first day of the New Year.

In the Pechersk district, an apartment building was partially destroyed by drone debris and caught fire between the 4th and 6th floors. The roof of a nearby non-residential building also caught fire. Both were extinguished. 

Two people were hospitalized.

A total of 75 rescuers and 19 fire and rescue engines are on the scene.  

In the Svyatoshynskyi district, several garages were destroyed and a fire broke out over an area of 20 square meters. No casualties. Tram tracks were damaged.

A series of explosions and air defense operations were reported by the Kyiv City Military Administration (KCMA) shortly after an air raid alert was issued by the Ukrainian Air Force at 6:50 a.m. EET in response to the approach of Russian attack drones and a possible threat of a ballistic missile strike.

On Dec. 30, the KCMA reported that Russian launched more than 1,300 drones, 200 cruise missiles, 24 ballistic missiles, 22 Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles, and seven Zircon hypersonic missiles on the Ukrainian capital in 2024.
