A ceasefire in Ukraine could be achieved through an international mission under a United Nations mandate, Chair of the EU Military Committee General Robert Brieger said in an interview with Welt on Jan. 25.

According to Brieger, EU countries could contribute significant forces to monitor a ceasefire. However, ensuring effective oversight of a demilitarized zone would require a substantial military presence. He noted that equipping such a mission would depend on political will, but from a military perspective, a robust mandate capable of using force if necessary would be essential to securing the ceasefire and preventing a renewed conflict.

The general also cast doubt on former U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to freeze the front line, arguing that such a move is unlikely and could lead to a prolonged conflict.
