Should negotiations on peace in Ukraine fail, the international community is prepared to strengthen sanctions against Russia, French President Emmanuel Macron said, BFMTV reported on Aug. 18.

“If the process is rejected, we all agree that sanctions will have to be intensified, and in any case we will have to take a position that further increases pressure on the Russian side,” Macron told reporters in Washington.

Overnight on Aug. 19, a meeting was held at the White House between U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and European leaders. The main topic of the talks was ending the Russian-Ukrainian war.

After the meeting, Trump held a phone call with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. Following the conversation, he announced start of preparations for a bilateral meeting between Putin and President Zelenskyy.

The U.S. leader also clarified that a three-party summit involving the United States, Ukraine, and Russia should take place later.
