"Everything is littered with destroyed and burned Russian equipment," he wrote.

"Notably, there’s almost no armored vehicles left — most of what remains are civilian cars, completely unprotected and destroyed with a single hit - the enemy might be running out of armor."

According to official Ukrainian General Staff data, as of the morning of Feb. 13, 2025, Russian forces have lost 10,040 tanks and 20,894 armored fighting vehicles.

In December 2024, analysts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) warned that Russia’s increasing losses of armored vehicles throughout the year could slow down its advances in certain areas of the front.

Reports indicated that as of late 2024, the Russian army had 47% of its pre-war tank reserves, 52% of its pre-war infantry fighting vehicles, and 45% of its pre-war armored personnel carriers remaining in storage.

In January 2025, ISW analysts noted that Russian forces were using armored vehicles less frequently in attacks on active frontline areas — likely an effort to preserve their dwindling stockpiles as Soviet-era reserves shrink and losses mount.

Military analyst David Axe from Forbes reported that after losing thousands of armored vehicles, Russian troops are increasingly conducting assaults using civilian cars, making this a new standard tactic.
