This attack against Russian companies was deliberately carried out on the anniversary of the historic Battle of Kruty, a pivotal moment in Ukraine's struggle for independence.
In late December 1917, the newly proclaimed Ukrainian People's Republic faced open aggression from Bolshevik Russia, which sought to crush Ukraine’s declaration of independence. The Battle of Kruty on Jan. 29, 1918, symbolized Ukraine's fierce resistance against Soviet forces, despite overwhelming odds. Today, the spirit of defiance against Russian aggression endures, with Ukrainian cyber forces targeting key Russian infrastructure as a modern tribute to the heroes of Kruty.
The cyberattack specifically targeted online services of enterprises that support the Russian occupying army.
Since Jan. 28, Gazprom customers have been unable to access their personal accounts, use the company’s online services, pay for fuel with fuel cards, or accumulate and redeem bonus points on their accounts.
In response to customer complaints, Gazprom representatives have described the situation as a "temporary technical failure", without explaining the nature or cause of the disruption.
At the moment, Russian companies have not provided any information on when their online services will be restored.
“Today’s problems for Russian drivers are a message from our brothers of 1918 — the heroes of the Battle of Kruty — who, more than a hundred years ago, fought off the criminal Russian gangs of the drug addict Muravyov," Ukrainian intelligence services commented on the attack.
"Today, we continue the work of Kyiv’s defenders, both on the battlefield and in cyberspace. Glory to Ukraine!”
