Germany’s foreign minister said he wants to discuss recent personnel changes in the Ukrainian Armed Forces with Kyiv, DW reported on July 22.

The minister made the remarks during a news conference in Nigeria.

“Germany is and will remain one of Ukraine’s strongest supporters — politically, economically and financially,” he said. “That is why we are extremely interested in understanding in detail what is happening there.”

“But I am confident that these are decisions we will be able to understand and that Ukraine’s overall reform process will continue,” he added.

Wadephul said he would soon hold talks with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha about “the overall security situation” and the personnel decisions made by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“I would like to understand many of them,” Wadephul said.

Ukraine must continue reforms aimed at strengthening the rule of law, democracy and parliamentary governance to advance toward European Union membership, he added.

Syrskyi’s dismissal: What is known

Zelenskyy announced on the evening of July 21, 2026, that Oleksandr Syrskyi was leaving his position as commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Syrskyi had held the post since February 2024, when he replaced Valerii Zaluzhnyi.

Joint Forces Commander Mykhailo Drapatyi, 43, was appointed as the new commander-in-chief.

Syrskyi’s dismissal came amid protests in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities that began after Mykhailo Fedorov was removed as defense minister on July 16.

The former defense minister said Syrskyi had blocked every initiative proposed by his team and had been “weaving intrigues.”

Syrskyi responded to his dismissal on July 22, saying he would continue serving Ukraine until victory.

Drapatyi said the same day that he had begun performing his duties as commander-in-chief.

Maj. Gen. Ihor Skybiuk, a former commander of Ukraine’s Air Assault Forces, will serve as chief of the General Staff under Drapatyi.
