On Nov. 11, by Hamburg city parliament members Markus Schreiber and Tim Stoberock suggested that Defense Minister Boris Pistorius should replace Scholz as “Germany's most popular politician,” capable of leading the SPD to victory.
“We are concerned about the upcoming federal elections,” the statement said.
“Chancellor Olaf Scholz has pursued a successful policy over the last three years but has failed to unite people and convey the idea of leadership to them. We believe his negative image in the country is irreparable.”
They are confident that Scholz can help the SPD by not seeking re-election and clearing the way for Pistorius to become the new candidate, an act they call a "service to the country."
Germany’s ruling coalition fell apart after Scholz dismissed Finance Minister Christian Lindner on Nov. 6. His departure was followed by other ministers from his Free Democratic Party.
