Germany and partners have launched City Dome, an initiative aimed at bolstering the defense of Ukrainian cities against Russian missile and drone attacks, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said on Sept. 8.

Pistorius made the announcement before a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, Ukrainska Pravda reported.

Germany will help create a system designed to form a “protective shield” over Ukrainian cities and strengthen their defenses against drones and missiles, the minister said.

“I am pleased that the important City Dome project is now being implemented,” Pistorius said.

“As part of this project, Germany will support the creation of a shield to protect Ukrainian cities from drone and missile attacks.”

He also said Berlin would continue supporting Ukraine not only in air defense but also by expanding its other military capabilities.

Germany plans to continue supplying Ukraine with drones and long-range munitions. It will also finance the purchase of tens of thousands of long-range artillery shells through a British artillery and air defense consortium. The munitions will be delivered to Ukraine after they are purchased.

Pistorius also said Berlin would provide Ukraine with PAC-2 interceptor missiles for Patriot air defense systems from Bundeswehr stocks.
