"This is not a new [weapon]. We heard these abbreviations UMPK — a universal module of planning and correction, i.e., when you put those little wings on a bomb and it can fly further," he explained.
"The [new KAB] is UMPB, a universal interservice planning munition. It is produced straight at the factory; this is a real KAB, a guided aviation bomb.
Because when you attach ordinary wings to a bomb, you take any bomb — an FAB, which they have and use — and with wings it flies. Guided aviation bombs, however, are assembled at the factory as a planning munition — a bomb that can fly a greater distance. As military expert Serhii Flash said: it’s a little like a cruise missile.
This is bad news. Its accuracy cannot be very high. The idea that it is controlled or corrected from outside is still a very bold assumption. It is not a precision weapon, but because it is a planning munition it can simply fly farther than a regular FAB with wings.
The only positive thing here is that it’s not merely a case of sticking wings on any bomb — it must be manufactured from the start as a planning munition, and the Russians certainly do not yet have many of those bombs.
How to fight them? It’s practically impossible to fight them directly. You need to fight the aircraft that drop these bombs. Our partners have air-to-air missiles that, fired from F-16s or Mirages or others, can reach the Su-type aircraft that drop these KABs.
So the issue is less about air defense and more about partners supplying us with weapons that can destroy the carrier aircraft of those KABs."
