Iryna Farion dies in hospital

Ukrainian linguistics professor, prominent public figure, and former MP Iryna Farion has died in hospital several hours after being shot in Lviv on July 19.

Lviv regional governor Maksym Kozytskyi announced her death via Telegram.

“Tragic news: despite all efforts by medical staff, Iryna Farion’s life could not be saved,” said Kozytskyi.

“My sincere condolences to her family, friends, and students. The search for the killer is ongoing.” 

Earlier on July 19, Farion was shot in broad daylight on Masaryka Street in Lviv. According to media reports, a young male assailant shot her in the head with a handgun.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy later said that Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko and SBU security service head Vasyl Malyuk are personally overseeing the investigation of the murder.

“All the necessary resources of the National Police and SBU are applied to establish the circumstances on this crime,” Zelenskyy said in a Telegram post.
