Russian war

Only robust security guarantees by Western powers could ensure that Ukraine is not attacked again in the future, EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, said on Aug. 19.

“Everyone is committed to a lasting peace that protects both Ukraine’s and Europe’s vital security interests,” Kallas said in a Twitter post.

“[Russian dictator Vladimir] Putin cannot be trusted to honor any promise or commitment. Therefore, security guarantees must be strong and credible enough to deter Russia from re-grouping and re-attacking.”

Kallas pledged that the EU will work to provide those guarantees by training Ukrainian troops and developing its defense industry.

“The EU will also continue targeting Russia’s war economy; the next sanctions package against Moscow should be ready by next month,” she added.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Aug. 18 talks in Washington with U.S. President Donald Trump and European leaders have begun shaping the future security guarantees for Ukraine. Trump said the United States would not send troops to Ukraine but would help “coordinate” those arrangements.

The United States and European nations are rushing to draft security guarantees for Ukraine to pave the way for a potential meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin. The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump and European leaders agreed to appoint U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to lead the effort.
