Kyiv calls for sanctions in response to Russia’s escalation threats

The minister was referring to the Kremlin vowing to “continue and intensify military operations” in Ukraine during a recent UN Security Council meeting.

“While the world insists it’s time to stop the killings and start meaningful diplomacy, Russia is using the highest diplomatic platforms to unleash belligerent rhetoric,” Sybiha said. 

He added that such statements by Russian representatives are “a slap in the face to” all parties pushing for a ceasefire in the Russo–Ukrainian war.

“We demand a reaction to Russia’s brazen remarks, which jeopardize the peace process; we insist that pressure on Moscow be increased immediately,” the minister stated.

Sybiha said now is “time to speak the language of sanctions,” arguing that Russia refuses to engage in good faith diplomacy.

Although U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly vented about Russian dictator Vladimir Putin stalling the U.S.-led ceasefire effort, he still refuses to announce new sanctions against Moscow or even threaten to do so.
