Protesters gathered in Kyiv to demand the suspension of Andrii Bilous, the artistic director of the Molodyy Theatre (Young Theater), over harassment allegations, Radio Svoboda wrote on Feb. 10.

Dozens of theater professionals and students assembled outside the Young Theater, urging authorities to address what they claim is a systemic problem in the industry.

The protest extended to Kyiv City State Administration, where one participant undressed in an act of defiance, prompting law enforcement officers to detain her. Other protesters followed suit in solidarity.

In response, Bilous told Radio Svoboda that he was being condemned by public pressure rather than solid evidence.

"I am fully open to investigation," he stated, insisting that all accusations should be legally verified.

"I welcome all official legal reviews, but I do not agree that decisions should be made by social media and protests rather than a court of law," Bilous added.

"Today, this precedent affects me, but tomorrow, anyone could be targeted the same way."

Previously, city authorities received two opposing petitions from Young Theater staff.

  • 46 employees signed a letter calling for Bilous’ suspension, accusing him of sexual misconduct.
  • 94 employees signed a counter-petition opposing his removal.

Bilous has denied the allegations, claiming he has evidence disproving the accusations. He also warned that if he is forcibly removed, he may revoke the licensing rights to his productions staged at the Young Theater.

On Feb. 5, the Kyiv Department of Culture declined to suspend Bilous, stating that legal grounds were insufficient.

"The department operates within legal boundaries," said Serhii Anzhiiak, head of the Culture Department.

"According to the law, a person can only be suspended for reasons such as intoxication at work or refusal to undergo medical examinations."

He further clarified that suspending Bilous requires a court ruling, which has not yet been issued.
