A Latvian man has been sentenced to six years in prison for participating in the war in Ukraine on the Russia's side, LRT media outlet reported on April 29.
He was given a six-year prison sentence and an additional two years of probation.
The man violated Latvia’s national security law, which prohibits serving in the foreign states Armed Forces.
It is reported that the Latvian joined the Russian army in 2023, becoming a soldier in the 80th Tank Regiment artillery unit.
In the fall of 2024, he was deployed to the front line in Donetsk Oblast. There, he was involved in building defensive fortifications for Russian forces, guarding territory, and participating in tactical combat and live-fire exercises.
The man was detained on Oct. 7 while attempting to illegally cross the border into Russia.
He pleaded guilty in court.
