Ukraine’s security guarantees cannot be discussed without Russia’s participation, says Russian FM Lavrov

Russia has reportedly agreed to security guarantees for Ukraine involving countries such as China, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also said that Russia itself should take part in providing these guarantees.

He added that seriously discussing guarantees without Russia’s involvement is “a road to nowhere.”

The U.S. and European countries are urgently developing security guarantees for Ukraine to pave the way for a potential meeting between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin.

According to the Wall Street Journal, U.S. President Donald Trump and European leaders agreed that Secretary of State Marco Rubio would lead a special working group. It will include national security advisers and NATO representatives tasked with preparing a draft of security guarantees for Ukraine.

Following Zelenskyy’s meetings with European leaders and Trump in the U.S., Russian officials began publicly rejecting Europe’s proposals for security guarantees for Ukraine as part of a potential peace deal, according to the Institute for the Study of War.
